You can share a home, a routine and a hundred messages a day, yet still miss the feeling of being together. Between decisions, responsibilities and the next thing to organise, a conversation can quietly become a list. Making room for each other can begin with something smaller than a grand gesture.

Choose an ordinary moment

Pick a moment you already share: the first coffee, the walk after dinner, the last few minutes of the evening. Ask whether you could give that time to each other, with phones out of reach and no task to finish. Keep it short enough that neither of you feels another obligation has been added to the day.

The point is to make a little room for the person beside you. Some days that might be a conversation; on others, sitting quietly together may feel more natural.

Ask something you do not already know

Try a question that makes space for an unexpected answer: “What have you been looking forward to lately?” or “What would you love a little more time for?” Listen without planning a reply. You can ask, “Have I understood that correctly?” before offering your own perspective.

The NHS highlights open conversation, listening and regular check-ins as useful ways to care for relationships. Our invitation is to bring that attention into one everyday moment.

Let a shared experience stay simple

Choose something that interests both of you: cooking something unfamiliar, visiting a place you have never explored, or setting out for an evening without a busy schedule. Leave enough room for the experience to become your own.

A journey together can offer a different setting and fewer everyday demands. It cannot promise to repair a relationship or replace couples therapy. What it can make room for is time, attention and the possibility of a new shared memory.

A LITTLE SOMETHING TO TRY

Ask each other: “What is one small thing we could look forward to together this week?”
